I myself never realised just what a bingo caller actually does, apart from the obvious who is calling the actual numbers, but after looking up information about the job I realised a lot more is involved in making sure the process runs smooth every time people play.
When the caller gets behind the podium there in front of them is a computerised system that lets them see the next number to be called and when there is a claim for bingo they then have to verify this claim by checking it themselves with a little help from the floor workers who recall the winning ticket number to the caller himself/herself. There is no experience needed in this job, but to be a bingo caller you do need to have good communication skills as there is nothing worse than having a miserable caller who you can not understand when they are calling out. Nowadays the need to learn the bingo lingo is not necessary, not like years ago when the caller used to make up little quotes for each number i.e.
two fat ladies etc. Which I personally prefer as it just adds that bit extra and makes it more enjoyable. Bingo Callers are not only in bingo halls, but are also online and every site you play at will have one, with Gala Bingo even having Sharon Osbourne as one of their callers. The other asset required to become a bingo caller is the need to keep up with the pace and be sure to call that number out before the next appears, else you could find yourself getting in all sorts of trouble.
